Meeting Aiki (of the Hamer people) made the stories I had heard about the hard life of women in Ethiopia seem much more poignant. What I found inspiring is that I heard these stories from an urban Ethiopian man, who had a passionate belief that education should not be a luxury, especially for women. He has, together with the community, built a local school.
I feel privileged to have created a channel through which people have been able to contribute directly to a grass-roots community led movement. Profits from sales of these prints will continue to go this project.
ROMANIA
Dr Ana is a Romanian doctor who worked tirelessly to make sure that the Roma people (‘gypsies’) were getting basic health care. Most of her Roma patients could not afford to pay her while some paid with apples. Dr Ana is a poignant example to me of just how influential an educated woman can be in supporting vulnerable women and their families.
